1982年南京大学本科毕业,同年进入中科院就读研究生并入选CUSBEA项目,1983年赴美,1989年获哥伦比亚大学博士,在哥伦比亚大学医学院及洛克菲勒大学完成博士后研究。1993-2010年,历任美国Genentech公司科学家/实验室主任、资深科学家。期间于2003年荣获国家自然科学基金委“海外杰青”。2010年全职回国。担任仁济医院干细胞研究中心主任。
长期致力于“干细胞与组织发育修复”和“肿瘤发生发展(包括肿瘤干细胞)”机制研究。近年来聚焦肿瘤干细胞、耐药性、诊断和靶向治疗的探索以及神经损伤修复和内耳毛细胞发育再生的研究。他的研究组于2000年在Nature Neurosci.发表了内耳毛细胞再生的里程碑研究成果; 2008年Nature杂志对他专门做了采访并专页报道了他对“单个干细胞能够在体重建器官”和“肿瘤干细胞理论”的见解。以通讯或第一作者在Nature, Science, Cell, Neuron, Nature Neurosci., Nature Communications, Gastroenterology, PNAS, Cancer Research 等杂志上发表了约70篇文章。获得48项美国专利。并受邀为美国NIH、英国Wellcome Trust、中国自然科学基金会以及40家包括Nature、Nature Medicine、Cancer Cell、Nature Cell Biology、Nature Communications等杂志评审。现正承担科技部国家重点科学研究计划(973)项目和国家自然科学基金重点及面上项目,也是上海市教委肿瘤学重点学科负责人和上海市卫计委重中之重临床肿瘤重点学科负责人。
